Church Information

Cheveley is first mentioned in 1085 in the Domesday Book. The present Church was built around 1260, and most of the building is 14th/15th century.

We are a voluntary controlled Church of England school, belonging to the Diocese of Ely. This means that we have close links with our local church as well as being part of the local and wider community. We work closely with groups within our community and are constantly striving to develop our links further.

At Cheveley we are proud of our Christian Ethos and we work hard to provide the children with a range of activities and experience to develop their understanding and spiritual development.

Our daily acts of worship focus on Christian values and our weekly Community Assembly is well attended by parents, we celebrate a whole range of children’s achievements and this results in a real sense of fellowship.

We organise a range of events, projects and experiences during the year, these include A Lent Challenge. Miss Rachel Burt is our RE coordinator and she leads and coordinates RE days and special theme days.

The Vicar and the wider Anglican Church local ministry team engage in events and lead worship both in School and at the church. Staff regularly walk the children to worship at St Mary’s Church, Cheveley, this is usually for important festivals and we especially enjoy Celebrating Christmas and Easter. We welcome support from parents who are also welcome to attend.

Our children support the annual Church Fete with competition entries and entertainments such as Choir renditions and gymnastics displays.

We are grateful to the wider Church community of Newmarket and the local villages for the support and are seeking to develop links with ‘Open the Book’.

We also welcome the support of independent volunteers and parents who give their time freely to provide other Christian and Spiritual learning experiences that focus on raising awareness of our Values and Bible Stories.

‘Godly Play’ and ‘ Quiet Club’ are small group activities which run on a weekly basis. Children enjoy taking part in these times of reflection. The sessions are planned and provided by Mrs Douglas of the ‘Spiritual Child Network’, she also coordinates the helpers with the approval of the Headteacher.

This network operates in churches and other schools across Cambridgeshire.

As a Church of England Aided primary school we are committed to our original Trust Deed and work in partnership with the Diocese of Ely and the Church community, we have provision for three Foundation Governors on our Governing Body.

Obviously, parents do have the statutory right under Section 71 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to withdraw their children from RE lessons and acts of Collective Worship but we really do encourage all children to be part of these times as they are fundamental to building our school community. Throughout the year we have a range of visitors and events that support our Christian vision. We explore other faiths during RE lessons so that children are taught to question and enquire about the world around them.
